Day Two of PSLE for Takoyaki

And I confess - I am so much more stressed than she is. Worry that she is not prepared enough, worry that she will be careless... argh. I gotta stop worrying and start believing.

So here are two very simple sandwich bentos for both RM and Takoyaki.

Minnie's Dinner - Ayam Siow Don

I was a little apprehensive about giving Minnie this because I wasn't sure she'd like it. Don't know if her parents have ever given her Peranakan food before. But they had told me before that as long as it's not one of the foods she's allergic to, they always want her to try and accept new flavours.

Ayam siow is served over plain Jasmine rice. On the side are corn kernels, carrot flowers, stirfried spinach, strawberry cherry tomatoes and some lotus root from our soup which I did not pack for her.

Leftover Day - Teriyaki Chicken Don

It was really convenient and fast to pack these bentos the night before, straight after dinner (making sure the food was uncontaminated first, of course) and throw them into the fridge.

Sides are kimchi, boiled carrot flowers and clementine.

Takoyaki has a konnyaku jelly for a treat

Roast Meat doesn't eat konnyaku jelly

A Slow Long Week of Stomach Flu

The bug has been moving around in my family and our neighbours, and it's been tough trying to keep up with the illness as well as PSLE prepping for Takoyaki. Plus I dropped my handphone and the camera lens is scratched, resulting in blurry photos. Bummer. Here are the bentos this week that I've been more pleased with.

1. Made things easier for myself by buying a chicken pie from Polar (upon request of Roast Meat).

2. Same things - steamed buns, cocktail sausage, edamame and apple bunnies - for both.

3. A super blurry pic of a bento Takoyaki made for herself for her PSLE Listening Comprehension day, because I was too zonked out with battling the stomach bug (I spent practically the whole night with the porcelain goddess). I am so glad she has the know-how, although her camera skills can do with more work d:)

Bentos at Teachers Day Celebrations

To celebrate the end of the term (and a nice rest from bentoing because I was just too stressed up), I made some inarizushis for both kids to enjoy at recess.

From the left, inarizushi with chopped up cucumber, inari with homemade salmon flakes, strawberry cherry tomatoes and clementine wedges.

Kimchi Bokkeumbap Bento

This was a filling lunch for me and almost-3yo Mouse (whose birthday is tomorrow), which we had in school as it was the Full Dress Rehearsal for the Teachers Day Concert. For more on my experience with the concert, please see my other blog.

I have been very surprised over the past few months as Mouse seems to have found a strong liking for spicy, sour kimchi. As long as we have kimchi on our table at home, he will always ask for it. That's why I did not hesitate at all when I felt like having kimchi fried rice for lunch in school today. As long as I cut down on the kimchi juice and it wasn't too spicy, I knew he would like it (and eat a lot).

My kimchi bokkeumbap is made of only kimchi, leftover rice (steamed up hot), and chopped ham. I topped it with a sunny side up and some strawberry cherry tomatoes. Learn how to cook it at Maangchi's website. She also has lots other scrumptious authentic Korean recipes (with video, yay!) on her site and that's where I learnt a lot of my Korean cooking.

Mojo Returning

So I gave them some power bentos today.

Leftover panfried chicken thighs with julienned cucumber on rice and the usual sides. Those cute little things in the rice are a strawberry shaped cherry tomato that is absolutely cute and tastes so sweet!
